<< previous | next >>ProfileContents'A Book of War by Sea and Land, 1543, by Jehan Bytharne' - This prints both the original French and a translation of a document describing the signals in use by French warships in the early sixteenth century. 'A Relation of the Voyage to Cadiz, 1596, by Sir William Slyngisbie' - A young officer's narrative of the expedition, with an interesting engraved plan of the landing. 'Glorious England: A Relation of the Battle of Quiberon Bay' - This translates a Portuguese pamphlet describing the battle and commenting on its results. 'Journals of Captain Henry Duncan, 1776-1782' - Duncan was Lord Howe's flag-captain in North America from 1776-1778, and again at the relief of Gibraltar in 1782, with other commands in between, all which he describes briefly in his private journal. 'Extracts from the Papers of Samuel, First Viscount Hood' - A small amount of correspondence when in command in the Mediterranean, 1793-1795, and some letters from his brother Lord Bridport, 1796-1798. 'Letters of Captain Hon. William Cathcart' - The letters, written between 1795 and 1804, illustrated daily life in the Navy rather than great events. 'Extracts from the Journals of Thomas Addison of the East India Company's Service, 1801-1830' - The private journals of the mate of various Indiamen, which have some value for naval operations and more for social life. 'Seizure of Heligoland, 1807' - A brief selection of official correspondence on the capture. 'Miscellaneous Letters' - There are 41 of these, of which 24 are from Nelson to Troubridge and six others also by Nelson. Further ReadingExtracts |
